Shade Shrubs
There are many shrubs that thrive in the shade and some of these even come from wild woodland shrubs.
One of the most popular shade shrubs is the azalea. The azalea produces beautiful pink, white and purple flowers in the spring before it produces leaves. It needs plenty of space to grow and will grow into a beautiful natural space without needing any pruning. Azaleas can also be pruned if you want it to grow into a specific shape.
Another shrub that is related to the azalea, the rhododendron, has larger flowers and a different growth habit. This type of shrub has long branches that produce brilliant flowers at the end and small tufts of leaves. Their branches also grow very long. This type of shrub also does very well with other underbrush plants.
Sun Shrubs
There is almost an endless amount of sun loving shrubs to chose from, including a variety of evergreen species.
Gardenias are very popular sun loving, flowering shrubs that produce white flowers that have a strong perfume. Crepe myrtle shrubs are similar to trees as their branches grow up and are present at the top of the shrub. They can reach heights of up to 10 feet. The crepe myrtle blooms in the summer and produces white, pink and purple flowers. If you have a space that is too small for a tree but too large for a bush then the crepe myrtle is the perfect shrub for that area.
Other popular landscaping shrubs are holly and juniper. They are maintenance free, evergreen shrubs that stay a beautiful emerald green color all year long. Holly shrubs produce bright red berries in the winter that attract birds.
