I'll submit this as a suggestion to anyone looking for anything - check online first! I have found that when it comes to pricing, variety and convenience - the Internet will always win over offline shopping. And shopping around online versus offline can be done with the click of a mouse. Save yourself some aggravation (and gas amongst other things), and look online when it comes to anything. In particular, fly fishing reel products - or other fly fishing items such as a fly rod reel. A reel and a rod are the TWO most important things when it comes to fishing. Its like a Chef having a kitchen without knives. Its a major necessity!
Don't buy cheap - buy high quality at a cost efficient price, and buy a brand name item like a hardy reel or a sage reel. The fly fishing reel is probably going to cost less than the actual rod itself, but it's still of the utmost important to buy a name you trust. Recently I started searching online for reels fly fishing because I am planning a trip to Montana and I wanted to try this "sport" out. Of course for me it's not about competition at all, it's just about relaxing and enjoying the trip.
But nonetheless, I wanted to do something fun, something new, and something interesting. And since I will be right by South Fork of the Flathead I figured this time was as good a time as any. At some offline stores you might feel rushed and you might (at some point or another) be overtaken by sales people who think they know what is best for you. I don't mind suggestions, but I definitely don't like being man-handled by a sales person. What I like - information. Give me suggestions, articles, tips, and content to read about actual products.
And that is what these sites online offer up to you - it's a no fuss no muss situation, but you can also end up learning a lot about the best fly fishing reel, how to pick the perfect fly rod, and the different kinds of rods and reels and which one would be the best choice for your specific outing or type of fish you might be "reeling" in. I like these sites as well because they are explanatory with each product. I hate those other sites where they give you a million products and say about three words. Give me some stats, tell me what its like to hold it, what is it good to catch, what is it made out of, etc.
They also give you top brands to choose from as well such as hardy reels, sage reels and other gear items. Most of the products on this one site I found gave you a pretty good and long layout of the product - you even had clear view pictures of every position of the rod and reel such as side, front, back and angular positions. This is going to give you a clear idea of IF it is the product for you or if it isn't. If it's not, fine. Move on and find a product that is.
Or if you need help ask the website a few questions. A lot of these sites also have blogs and forums as well so that you can swap suggestions and tips with other fly fishermen (or women). Take advantage of these sites as much as you can!
