The summer months may be over, but garden irrigation is still a priority for the serious horticulture expert, especially when cultivating plants that are protected from the elements in a potting shed or poly tunnel. Ensuring that plants receive the right amount of water and nutrients is essential for optimum growth, and the latest garden irrigation systems allow solutions to be added to the water to meet the needs of each individual plant.

The popularity of irrigation systems has risen in recent years due to concerns over water usage. This has particularly affected gardeners that work commercially and those who have taken to growing their own fruits, vegetables and herbs. It has become apparent that water supplies are low, not just in the summer months but all year round, and as a result water supply companies have enforced hosepipe bans and attempted to raise awareness about wasting water.

Some horticulturalists have started to collect rain water or grey water to use for plant watering, whereas others have opted to use garden irrigation systems in an attempt to conserve water. The benefits of irrigation systems include conservative use of water, specific and flexible watering strategies and the ability to add nutrients directly, and more essentially, automation.

Garden irrigation systems can be programmed via a timer to only water when necessary, which avoids problems with over or under watering, especially if the plants are to be left unattended for a long amount of time. These systems are also particularly useful for cultivating delicate or hard to grow plants. There is a niche market for exotic plants and flowers, and for horticulturists in this line of business, the need for drip irrigation is not a matter of water conservation.

For particularly delicate plants it is essential that the right levels of water and nutrients are added continually in small amounts to avoid trauma during the growth cycle. This is particularly important in the seedling stage, as plants are hardier once established. Although the set up costs of an irrigation system are more expensive than purchasing a watering can and hose, the benefits far outweigh this cost.

The benefits of this type of watering system are being adopted by gardeners and horticultural experts the world over to ensure maximum yield from a crop, whether it is a vegetable patch or an orchid farm; saving water and increasing profits. It is a solution that has proved successful in commercial agriculture for many years, and is now being adopted by the horticulture industry.
