Shade sails are becoming far more popular in the UK then they ever have been, however they have been very popular in the United States and Australia. They have always been successful in these countries because of the hotter climate, but also because of the knowledge of what a sail shade is and what they can be used for. Shade sails offer a good level of shade for an outdoor space that is exposed to sunlight. They are stylish, modern and provide a permanent space away from the sun.

In the past shade sails were reported to have been used by the Greeks and Romans. Ancient sailors would use their sails to shelter from the sun once they landed on the beach at a port. Roman coliseums were also covered with sail shades to protect the spectators from the sun, when they went to view battles. The sails provided enough protection to give the spectators a comfortable experience.

Although the concept of sail shades is a simple one, the types of materials that are used have improved largely through the years. The shades that are now available offer strong UV protection and move hot air from underneath the sail and allow the wind to pass through. The new fabrics that are used now for sail shades have made them lighter and more durable. With this new material they are now easy for anyone to put up their own garden quickly without hassle.

Sail shades are also a semi-permanent structure, as often rain can damage them as they are designed exclusively for heat. This means that in colder months they can be taken down to stop them from getting damaged. Shade sail companies can even create customised sail shades for customers, offering a bespoke service which will take in to consideration size, shape and colour.

Many shade sails are available as either square or triangle pieces of material, when this shape is attached to certain points it creates an attractive curved effect that looks great in outdoor spaces. Pre-made sail shades are usually cheaper to purchase than bespoke designed ones.

When it comes to looking for quality made sail shades it will depend on the supplier and manufacturer you choose. Sail shades have no legislative body that determines quality of sail shades, so the quality can vary considerably. If you find a company that looks well respected then make sure you check examine the material of the sail shades before you part with your cash.
