Betta fish is an attractive and beautiful fish for your aquarium. However, in return of its colorful presence in your aquarium, you have to learn the best ways in caring for betta fish that will make them healthier and livelier.
Although this type of tropical fish is relatively easy to take care of, you have to understand some special considerations about their needs and behavior. To help make it a little easier for you, here are ten tips that can help you take care of a healthier and happier betta.
1. Choose a tank size that provides ample space for your betta fish. A shallow one can do but a larger fish tank can prevent tearing and damaging the fins of your betta and can make them happier as well.
2. Only keep one male betta in one fish tank. Keeping two or more male bettas and adding other betta fishes can make the male very aggressive and may end up killing the other bettas. Remember that betta fish are also named Siamese fighting fish, and they can indeed fight to death.
3. In caring for betta fish, make sure you give them warm water in their tank. This type of fish thrive in a tropical habitat thus your water temperature should be around 77 to 80 degrees, a temperature lower than this may cause your betta to be sluggish.
4. Make sure that the water acidity for your fish should be close to neutral or 7.0, although they can thrive with pH between 6.5 to 7.5.
5. The female betta can be placed in one fish tank considering that you place them in groups of three. You also need to put some structures for the female bettas to hide but don't overcrowd them in the tank to avoid damage to their fins.
6. Feed your betta with pellets once a day. You can also treat them with brine shrimp or frozen bloodworms as these fishes are carnivores. Remember not to handle the bloodworms with your hands as they can also cause irritation or allergy. Caring for betta fish also means avoiding them to be overfed and fat. Also remember that once there are live foods available in your fish tank, they will continue to eat and may lead to chances of overeating and harming their health.
7. Do not change the water of your fish tank at once and do not change the water temperature abruptly to prevent harm to your bettas.
8. If you are putting your betta in a community tank, make sure that you don't mix them with other betta and other fishes with long fins, as they can be mistaken as other bettas and may be attacked by the males.
9. Cover your fish tank or avoid filling your tank up to the brim. Bettas can jump three inches high and can leap out of the tank.
10. Play games with your betta friend. They do recognize people feeding them and thus can get active once you get to approach them and feed them. Caring for betta fish indeed is also about enjoying these colorful creatures in your fish tank occasionally.
