In the garden shade is important, although it may not be favourable for all you keen gardeners it is good to have an area that is not exposed to light. This means on days you want to enjoy the sun you will be able to do so safely. There are ways of shade gardening so that you can have the best of both worlds when you are keeping your skin safe out of the glare of UV rays.

Shade gardens look better with less maintenance than sunny gardens, they are also better at being protected from summer and winter damage. Nearby trees and walls make good garden shade as they will keep the garden safe from drying winter wind. A shady part of the garden is good for relaxing with a book and will make sure that you never are over-exposed to sunlight.

Many areas of the garden that see a lot of shade are cool and moist, the area will probably have deep rooted trees and be covered in mulch from fallen leaves. The soil in garden shade is usually very rich and will be easy to dig. Plants that thrive in the shade will suit these areas perfectly and plants can be put straight into the ground with very little preparation beforehand.

The most difficult plant to grow in garden shade is the lawn; they tend to grow quickly at first but then are sparse and die in places. Most of the time they will need over seeding to get a thicker look, some gardeners will advise that you water the grass a lot with fertilizer, that may not work. The best option to have a better lawn in your garden shade is to purchase seed mixes that are designed for that purpose.

It is because of the poor growth of lawns that many people seem unsure of a shade garden but once they have replaced lawn with plants they find the garden looking just as lovely even though there is less lawn. If you cannot live without a lawn then there is always the option of shade-tolerant lawn covers that make areas of green and require small amounts of maintenance.

To increase levels of light in your garden shade, then there are some simple things you can do. Painting a wall white is a good way of increasing the light and the same effect can be achieved with white furniture. Trimming the foliage so that it lets in more light is also another way of increasing the light your garden receives.
