When thinking about getting a new puppy or dog there are a few things you need to get and have ready when you bring the new pet home.

When adopting a dog or puppy for the first time, there are certain things every owner should have on hand from day one. Some things are optional and some should be considered necessities.

After you have had your new pet for a few days you will have a better idea of what types of things you absolutely need and what types of things you do not feel you will use. Some of the things that people would see as optional you may wish to have from day one, depending on your situation.

Food and water are both necessities. So when you bring home a new puppy you should ensure that you have a water bowl, food bowl, and your choice of dog food for your new pet.

Having food and water set out for the dog right when you get home will help the animal adjust to the new living quarters and feel more comfortable when first entering your home.

It is important to have a leash for your new pet. This will allow you to take your pet out to get exercise while allowing you to maintain control.

This is especially important at the beginning. You want to set boundaries and train your dog to be well behaved. The best way to train your pet is to start with good habits from the very beginning.

A proud owner of a new dog should always get their dog a collar. It will keep your puppy or dog safe if they get lost.

A dog collar should have on it the name of the dog, your address, your phone number, and any medical information they should know if they need to watch your dog for a few hours.

If your dog gets lost, the collar is likely the thing that will bring your pet home. Make sure that it is secured and that it will not easily come off, but is still comfortable for the dog.

It is important to do your research and have a local veterinarian chosen. This is especially true if it is a new pet.

After getting a new pet you should visit the vet as soon as possible. This will help ensure that your dog is healthy, has all the shots required, and allows you to choose if you want to get them spayed or neutered.

If your dog is going to be an outside dog or if the dog will spend any length of time outdoors then you should get them a shelter or a kennel. These are important to help protect your pet from the elements, keep them in a specific area, and give you a place to put their toys, food, and other accessories.

There are many other accessories you can get to help keep you and your dog happy. You can get a dog bed.

This can be either a big pillow or an actual dog bed that will provide your dog a cozy place to sleep. Dog toys and chewys are a fun thing to get for your dog.

They are especially recommended for puppies, so that they will chew less on other things. A dog crate or carriers can be great if you are going to be moving your pet from one place to another or if you want to use it for a bed or a place to put them for a bit.

Depending on the type of dog you get you may or may not need to get a dog brush and or comb. These accessories are not needed for hairless dogs.

Dog shampoo is great if you are going to be washing your dog instead of taking them to get washed. It is always a good idea to bathe your dog at least every couple of weeks to keep their fur nice.

Puppy pee pee pads can be important if you are training a young pup to be potty trained. If not, these are not that important for you to get.

Dog clippers and strippers can be important depending on coat type of your new dog. Keeping your dog well groomed is important.

As you shop for necessities and accessories keep your new dog in mind. This will help you know what will work for the particular breed and will allow you to choose the right things to keep both of you happy.
