Whenever any cat backs himself up to a door or any other object in your home, lifts his tail, and sprays urine – you have a dilemma. This problem is identified as spraying, and is very frequent with cats kept inside. Although it is a very maddening dilemma, it’s a difficulty that can be solved.
Despite what a lot of people believe, spraying isn’t a litter box problem, but more accurately a problem with marking. Cat urine that is sprayed contains pheromones, which is a substance that cats and other animals use for communicating. Pheromones are much like fingerprints with humans, as they are used to associate the cat to other animals.
As soon as a cat sprays something, he is merely marking his area through his urine. The spraying is simply the cat’s means of letting others know that the territory is his. Even if it may make you annoyed and infuriate you, getting angry with your cat will solve nothing. If you scream or show anger aimed at your cat, it can very well result in more spraying.
When a cat is in heat, she is more attracted to the smell of the male cat's urine.. For cats in heat, spraying is more or less an invitation for love. Many times, cats that spray while a female is in heat can result in a litter of kittens that are born in just a few short months. Keep in mind that cats not only spray during heat, as some will also spray during meetings with other cats, or when they are feeling strained.
Although spraying is a way of communicating for cats, the stench for people is ghastly. The great thing here is that most cats will do a majority of their spraying out-of-doors. If your cat never goes outside, spraying can in fact be a problem. As soon as you notice spraying in your residence, you need to take action and do something about it instantly.
The best and also the simplest way to stop spraying is to have your cat either neutered or spayed, depending on the gender. Nearly all male cats that have been neutered will stop spraying the same day they have the surgical procedure. If you don’t want to get your cat neutered or spayed, you must look into other options. If you wish to one day breed your cat, you definitely don’t want to have him or her neutered or spayed.
Talking to your vet is the best thing to do if this is the situation. He should be able to provide other options, and most likely even solve the problem without the need for surgery.
If there is a medical situation that is causing the problem, which your vet can spot. You have to always do something about spraying the moment it starts – simply because cat urine smells terrible and it can leave stains all over your house.
