The Fascinating History of Rock Climbing

Rock climbing has been around for years as people have had to use its techniques to scale different rock formations when trying to cross rough terrain. It did not become a sport of its own until more recently however, allowing more and more people to become involved in it as rock climbing gyms and outdoor recreation centers have sprung up around the country. These centers provide all of the equipment that people need to participate in the sport of rock climbing, allowing people to rent it out if they do not have equipment of their own. It also allows guides and other expert trainers to be on hand to help people who are not familiar with the sport. The rock climbing gyms allow people to practice their skills and techniques in the safety of an indoor environment where they are always strapped to a harness with someone belaying their progress at all times.

Mountaineering

The history of rock climbing starts with the sport of mountaineering. People would go on treks where they would need to pass over mountaintops which would occasionally require that they climb steep cliffs in the process. This is the first part in the history of rock climbing, as these first adventurers had to figure out new ways to obtain hand and foot holds on the faces of cliffs where it looked like travel would not be possible to do. They also had to learn what types of equipment would benefit them in the history of rock climbing as the equipment varied from landscape to landscape during each trip.

The history of rock climbing then led people to start to practice on nearby rock formations before going on their mountaineering journey so that they would be stronger and more prepared for the conditions that they might face. This part of the history of rock climbing is what led some people to enjoy the rock climbing so much that it became their focus rather than mountaineering. As more and more people began to participate in these local climbs, the equipment that was used became more specialized. There were new shoes and clothing items that began to be used to make climbing more comfortable, and helmets and harnesses were developed to make climbing safer for people to do.

Today, the history of rock climbing has progressed to include the indoor gyms where there are rock climbing walls that have different formations for people to practice on.
