Several owners believe that their cat is just too unresponsive to listen. Some owners feel that their Kitty is untrainable simply because they are so independent. To put it simply pets fail to obey because they don't understand what it is that you want from them. So, if you have tried to train your cat, you may not be doing it right.
Good Cat:
Training your cat takes time and patience. It takes more of that than it does with a dog. Using positive reinforcement is a good way to achieve the results you desire. Whatever you do, don’t scold your cat because she is likely to just misbehave when you aren’t looking. Instead, praise good behavior. Any cat can learn. It is recommended to start when the cat is relatively young, eight to ten weeks would be ideal. But, the pet will do well at any age.
How to get started?
When in the process of training your cat the first thing to start with is for your cat to come when called. Hold your cat’s favorite treat and call his name. You'll want to ensure that your cat is in a postive frame of mind. Try to ensure that there isn't a great deal of noise. Distractions will slow down the cat or confuse him. Decide on a single command. The command should be short and easy to say. For example, here kitty or come kitty work extremely well. Now, get down on her level by sitting or kneeling on the floor. Verbalise the command. Please make sure that your tone is happy and excited. When your cat responds to you, reward him with praise and a treat. Try to ensure that you sufficiently praise your cat. Then, try moving away and do the same thing again. Try and use the same tone of voice and the same direction. Work on it for no longer than ten minutes. If your cat is showing signs of boredom or frustration it is time to stop. Repeat this two to three times a day for approximately a week. Once your kitty has mastered this command you can then move onto others.
There are several things that your cat has to learn for his own well being these are also necessary to taech all cats. For example, your cat needs to learn to tolerate a harness and a lead in case you are required to travel with him. Also, the cat should learn to use a carry-crate.
A Harness and Leash:
To do this, you’ll want to start by putting the harness on him. Do not restrain your cat once it is place. Praise him for it. Reward your kitty with a treat for responding so well. Once he is accustomed to wearing it attach the leash and allow him to lead you throughout the area. Coax your cat into following you by using praise and treats. Some cats will learn to heel on the leash. However, most will not. All should learn to not panic or to struggle, though when wearing a leash.
A Carry Crate:
When it comes to the crate, it can be done a little simpler. Cats love warm dark spaces and so placing a comfortable blanket or even a favourite toy inside the cat's crate. Praise him when you place him inside. Then, simply leave him there for a couple of minutes. Make sure that you let him out within three to five minutes. Avoid offering your cat ptaise when he leaves the carry case as you do not want him to be under the impression that this is the good behaviour. Make sure you offer rewards whenever he goes in. Each time try leaving the cat in the crate a little longer. It will result in your cat being trained well enough to keep him there.
These simple hints and tips may show you how useful it can be to give your cat a little discipline.
