Four words we Americans are hearing more and more are about these hard economic times. Many Food bank lines are growing longer and jobless rates are climbing higher, yet in these hard economic times we must be reminded that we are nowhere near the turbulent waters of the 20th century's Great Depression. America's Great Depression began in 1929 and ending with our involvement in World War II in 1941. During the Great Depression jobs were scarce, banks closed, industry slowed, and construction all but halted.
Despite these downturns, the cheap price of labor allowed for some great projects to be completed. Some of these projects included the Empire State Building, Golden Gate Bridge, and the Hoover Dam. The Dam, named after President Herbert H. Hoover was the greatest man made marvel of its time. While dozens of dams have gone on to surpass the Hoover Dam in height and length, the conditions in which the Hoover Dam was built makes it one of the most impressive architectural feats in history.
An enormous amount of concrete was poured during construction, enough to pave a two-lane highway from San Francisco to New York. As concrete hardens a chemical reaction takes place, which generates heat. Refrigerated water was sent through steel tubes inside the concrete to draw out the heat and allow for the concrete to cure. It would have taken over 100 years for that concrete to cure without this process! In 1985 The Hoover Dam was classified a National Historic Monument.
The dam is not only a historical attracation but has significant value as an energy source. It not only supplies much of the Western United States with power produced by its giant hydroelectric turbines, but it is also a major tourist destination for people from all over the United States and the world.
The Dam is located near Las Vegas, Nevada. If you are planning a trip to Las Vegas in the coming year, you should consider visiting not just main attractions of Las Vegas like its casinos and big name shows, but also the attractions outside of Las Vegas. Within driving distance of Las Vegas are the Valley of Fire State Park, the Grand Canyon, and the magnificent Hoover Dam. Don't have transportation? This is not a problem. There are several quality tour companies to choose from.
They will pick you up, take you to these and other destinations, all the while letting you relax and enjoy the scenery. You could visit the Dam, be driven to the best scenic views most tourists will never find, and sit back as you let your driver fill you in on all the dam details. Take a dam tour, or even take a raft trip to the foot of the dam, something few ever get to experience. Good touring companies offer Hummer H2 tours at prices that won't exceed your budget and luxury accommodations that will make you think you have!
