A Few Tips on FlagStone
Tip #1 - To order to cut Flagstone, you will need a chisel, a hammer, or a Masonry Saw. For large projects a masonry saw will be the best but a simple hammer will also do the trick if you want to cut down the costs.
Tip #2- Always measure out exactly where you want you flagstone to be placed. No this does not mean by just looking at it, get down and dirty and use a tape measure. This will cut down the cost of how much flagstone you buy.
Tip #3 - Do not rush yourself to get the project done. Take a weekend and focus on your flagstone project. Flagstone will have a outstanding look to your home if you take the time to do it correctly.
Tips #4 - Always wear safety glasses or goggles. If you are using a chisel, hammer, or Masonry saw, there is always a chance of getting pieces of rock in your eye. Always wear protective gear when cutting.
Tip#5 - Get some help. You have kids, put them to work. If you have a buddy from work, ask him for some help. The more help you have the faster you will get done and the more time you will have to enjoy you new outdoor flagstone patio.
Laying Flagstone - Preparing the Surface
Mark out the area where you want to lay flagstone with spray paint. Dig up the sod and remove all organic debris. Dig down and smooth the dirt at a depth of about 3 inches. Remove tree roots also, if you have to dig under them to cut them, fill in these low spots with dirt or sand. Rake the area level and tamp the soil firmly with a hand tamper or use a power vibrating tamper for larger areas. Fill in and revamp low spots. Install edging, if desired, before you lay the stones.
Laying Flagstone - Lay Stones in a Pattern
Start the laying of stones with large stones around the perimeter. If a stone is too high, pick it up and dig out some soil; if it's too low, add some soil or sand beneath it. Test each stone to make sure it does not rock and make sure it is level. Wherever possible, use uncut stones. When you have to cut a stone, lay one stone over the one it will bump up against and trace its outline with chalk or a pencil. Use a masonry saw that you can rent to cut the stone. Be sure to wear eye protection as you cut the stones.
Put dirt or sand in between the joints of the flagstone. Wet the patio surface with a fine spray, cleaning the stones while thoroughly wetting the dirt or sand in the joints to help solidify the joint fill material.
