Camping has long been a favorite pastime for me and my family. Now that I live in a state that is absolutely full to bursting with hiking trails and campgrounds, I can't wait to get out into the great outdoors again!
For me, nothing spells out the perfect vacation like an extended camping trip. But when you want to spend more than just a night or two roughin' it, there are a few extra supplies you will need for your trip.
First of all, you will want to determine whether you want to backpack to your destination or choose an area to which you can easily drive. Some serious outdoorsmen (and women and children) enjoy traveling from site to site as their week or two of camping progresses for variety and adventure.
On the coast or at some lakes, people prefer to use a sea kayak in order to go to and from campsites. Sea kayaks, unlike white water kayaks, are large and provide plenty of storage for camping gear and other essentials, like food and water. This is often a great exercise in cooperation for the whole family.
Of course you will need a tent. If you would like to pack in and pack out, a lightweight tent will be your best option, but if you are bringing along friends or the whole family, you will be squeezed into it like sardines.
But on the other hand, if you are hoping to create a week-long home away from home, there are more spacious family tents.
Be aware of the weather conditions for the days that you plan to camp. Be sure to bring ponchos, jackets, and emergency blankets (which are very lightweight) even if you don't expect rain or cold conditions.
Check your sleeping bags to see up to what temperature they protect you and keep you warm. Even in summertime, you should try to select the best cold protection for the maximum value, especially if you are going on a budget.
A water purification system is very important if you plan on using a local water source, even if it's from a tap on a campground. You may have to do laundry while you are camping, so be prepared, preferably with a natural, gentle detergent like borax.
You obviously won't have a dryer, so make sure you have a clothesline with you. If you are close to your car, you can easily bring a full-sized line dryer with you, or you can bring rope in your backpack to string up between trees.
For me, camping is the ultimate escape. But nothing can ruin such a trip like not being prepared! So start gathering your supplies before summer fades away.
