When looking for high quality supplies for your pet you should consider whether they are essential or merely on a 'wish list' if you have a limited budget. Any pet, irrespective of size, can be costly to look after and care for properly. Finding the low cost supplies which do not compromise on quality is a great way to make your budget go further.

The first thing you should is consider whether the item is a absolute necessity to maintain the health of your pet. Choosing the right type of food is the first fundamental factor to consider. Whilst it may be nice to be able to provide your pet with fresh food on a daily basis animals which can also thrive on manufactured foods can be a more cost effective way to providing them with the nutrients, vitamins and proteins they need to remain in optimum health.

There is a wide choice of pre-packaged pet foods on the market which can be basically be divided into two categories wet and dry food. Exotic animals may need to be fed on specialised foods as such it would be wise to research the needs of the animal before you purchase it, otherwise you could be in for a nasty shock if you find out that they can only be fed certain foods, which may not be readily available, these will undoubtedly be more expensive.

The breed, age and general overall health of your pet will also need to be given careful consideration when you buy food, if you are unsure local vets will be able to provide advice and guidance.

You will then need to look at pet products which are needed because they are a legal requirement, such as having dogs which are classified in the UK as dangerous may have to wear a muzzle when taken into public places, again a vet will advise as to which breeds of dogs this applies to.

Other considerations should include over the counter remedies and preventative treatments for fleas, ticks and worms. These can also become costly, therefore you should include these within your pet's expenditure budget under necessity, rather than a luxury.

Housing and bedding, these are a necessity and should not be considered a luxury. Having the correct cage or house, along with the correct type of bedding is essential to maintaining the health of your pet.

Toys are also necessary to keep some types of pet happy and content. Caged birds and rodents such as rats, mice and hamsters all need a toys to stimulate them and prevent them from becoming bored and self harming, therefore these too are considered a necessity rather than a luxury.

Traveling cages are also a necessity for most pets in order that they can be taken to the vets without becoming too distressed, they size and style of the travel cage will be dependent on the breed of pet, again a vet will be able to advise as to which is the most suitable.

Luxury pet supplies are those which are considered nice to have to pamper your pet and yet the pet is able to live a healthy life without them!
