With the growing allegations over commercial pet food that they are harmful to pets, owners are getting more and more disillusioned with it all. This environment forces owners to make a critical decision, whether to stick to the commercial dog foods by switching over to the costly brands or to make their own pet food right in the comfort of their homes.

Compared with what we humans consume, dog food is not much distinct. It also has all the nutrients that our body needs. It is also a balanced diet and it also is seasoned for flavor. In fact a complete analysis of dog foods reveal that it is 2/5th parts protein and remaining equal parts of carbohydrate and vegetables. However, take a look at cheap dog foods they come with grain in them and are packed with carbohydrates or vegetables.

For your homemade dog food you can use meat such as turkey and beef. Both are equally rich in proteins. Best would be turkey that has a healthier content of protein as opposed to beef. Two great meat meals are turkey, rice and carrots, and the second is beef with brown rice. Both have a good aroma that your dog will simply love.

To make these doggie delights one need not use fresh veggies, instead the frozen type shall suffice. Dice them up, boil them well and season them with a little salt and garlic. This should serve as the base to add in the meat and carbohydrate parts. Dogs generally do not have a preference over the type of carbohydrate they consume, however, depending on choices potatoes or rice can be used.

Contrary to popularly held misconception, dog food recipes are just as easy as preparing recipes for us. The good thing about home recipes for dogs is that they can be stored in refrigerators for as long as a week thus allowing you to cook once in the week. Simply heat it up a little everyday and feed it to your dog.

If your dog was on a commercial dog food diet, then it would be best to slowly shift it away towards a home grown diet plan over the period of a week. Alternate the type of food so that it does not get stomach upsets and diarrhea. You should be able to give it a completely homemade diet by the end of the week.

Home food is also very healthy for your dog. A dog completely on a homemade diet is prone to lesser allergies as this food has all natural proteins unlike the commercial varieties that are high on artificial proteins which, is the biggest contributor to dog allergies.

If you search the web you will find hundreds of different recipes not only on dog meals but on dog snacks and biscuits as well. Thus, you can even prepare the snacks that you wish to feed your dog instead of getting them from the market.
