German shepherd puppies respond very well to early training. At the age of eight weeks is the best time to start training your dog and it's best to start off with training him to obey basic commands.

It's vitally important to establish which of you is in control once you begin your training because if your dog doesn't see you as having authority than it's going to be very difficult to get him to respond to your commands especially if he is aggressive.

Leash training involves attaching a leash on your dog and using it in such a way as to get the attention of your dog especially when establishing the dominant role in your relationship.

German shepherds are known for getting distracted easily and with the leash training technique you can abruptly regain their attention whenever you're about to teach them something new.

In the case of distractions like birds, strangers or other dogs it will be necessary to exert some tension on the leash to keep him focused.

While you're training your dog it's necessary to keep a tight grip on the leash at all times. Each time your dog starts to respond favorably to your commands, then you can loosen your grip slightly to remind him to pay attention to you as well as see you as the dominant figure in the relationship.

While leash training is an effective way to train your German Shepherd, it's especially effective if you reward your dog with a treat or pet on the head when he's doing the right thing.
