My dog is great. I love my dog and take him everywhere I go. Until recently my dog, Roscoe slept in my bed. The truth is, I didn’t even have a dog bed. Some success in dating has changed my perspective of Roscoe sleeping in my bed.
The day I first brought home a dog bed, Roscoe looked at me as if I was completely crazy. I have little doubt that he thought the bed was intended for me. He obviously had no plan of leaving a comfortable Queen sized bed in favor of a dog bed.
Day one - I attempted to show him how relaxing it was by me lying down on it. Naturally, when he saw me lying down on it he assumd that I was messing around with him and it became play time rather then check out the new bed time. I tried for about a half-hour and then gave up. I am a lightweight and openly admit it.
Day 2- I was determined to get him to sleep in the dog bed. I shut the door to my bedroom about the time he typically puts himself to bed hoping it would force him to check out the dog bed which I laid out next to the door. A few puzzled looks, a huff and puff later and the dog decided he was more than happy to sleep on the couch that night. Roscoe triumphs again.
Day 3 - At bed time I brought the dog bed into my bedroom and put it at the foot of my bed and shut the door. Whenever he tried to get on the bed I informed him he wasn’t supposed to. The crying melted my heart and I gave up after about fifteen minutes. Yes, I’m a softy and am proud of it. He wins once more.
Day four - Now I knew I had the answer. I brilliantly placed all his favorite toys on the dog bed and watched him play with them. I knew he would get tuckered out and go to sleep on it. I watched in great delight. He played and he played. And he kept playing. I began reading a book. Before shutting off the lamp to go to bed I wanted to see him enjoying his dog bed, so I sat up and saw that Roscoe was happily asleep…on my bed. He beat me once more.
Day 5 - A few friendly jokes at my expense and a few pointers from my buddies and I was determined to achieve getting Roscoe to sleep on his dog bed. I had a handful of his favorite dog snacks. He goes crazy for them (almost like how I feel about cookie dough ice cream I guess). I told him to lie down on the ground and I gave him a cookie. I told him to get up and he got a dog snack. Roscoe was following all my commands and receiving cookies.
I had Roscoe move onto his dog bed and I gave him a treat. I told him to take a seat on it and he acquired one more dog snack. I then told him to lay on it and he got another treat. I rubbed his tummy and he curled up on the bed enjoying the attention. Could it be? Would he stay?
Sure thing, he stayed. He wound up sleeping on the bed all night. Actually, I think he had fun with it. Maybe it was the distance away from my snoring that did it. He slept the whole night on his dog bed. In fact it is been five months and he's slept every night on his dog bed regardless of where in the house I put it. It took a bit of persistence but now I sleep in my bed and Roscoe sleeps in his dog bed. All is right in our joyful household.
