Known as the Folklore Capital of Peru, the city of Puno is the capital of the region with the same name and it is located in southeastern Peru. The city stands at 12 566 feet above sea level, on the shore of Lake Titicaca, and has a population of more than 120 000 inhabitants.
Established in 1688 by viceroy Pedro Antonio Fern?ndez de Castro, Puno is nowadays an important agricultural and livestock region. It is also an important tourist destination and the third most visited city in Peru, after Cuzco and Lima. Must-see attractions in Puno include the magnificent Cathedral, the Plaza de Armas, the church of San Juan, Pino Park and more. Visitors can visit the floating islands that lie in Lake Titicaca. The city is also famous for its many traditional celebrations such as the feast of La Virgen de la Candelaria and the Regional Competition of Autochthonous Dances.
Puno is known for being home to many important writers and poets, being probably the most famous Carlos Oquendo de Amat. The city also boasts three universities.
