Exceptional outdoor living requires carefully planned, cultivated, and constructed elements to offer a truly impeccable experience to homeowners and guests. Both organic and inorganic elements are equally important to its success. It is not enough to walk outside and see a nicely mowed lawn, brightly colored flowers, and trees in the yard. These elements must be carefully arranged and consistently maintained in order to create living environments suitable to human comfort. Outdoor surfaces and structures must also be constructed to create sustainable comfort zones and accommodations for specific forms of gathering and entertainment.

When we develop the organic aspects of a landscape, we concentrate on creating geometric forms that communicate the energies of Nature without violating the sense of order and system that has been ingrained in human consciousness for the past 10,000 years. This is why garden design plays such a pivotal role in establishing the aesthetics of Houston outdoor living. Even if we are planting a garden with indigenous species, we still want to contain those plants within the boundaries of a recognizable form whose geometry and color scheme reflect the architectural style of the home and also blend harmoniously with surrounding terrain.

Along similar lines, good outdoor living needs consistent and professional Tree maintenance if people are going to enjoy any amount of time in the shade. Trees are not as self sustaining as many people assume. In southern climates especially, they are very susceptible to any number of parasites, diseases, and destroying insects that can quickly strip entire branches of their leaves if protective measures are not taken. They also need to be trimmed in order to maintain a form that properly compliments both home architecture and natural landscape design.

In addition to carefully developed gardens and tree plantings, we also have to devote a major amount of our focus and energy on landscape design for entertainment. Swimming pool remodeling is one of the most important parts of this phase because of the central position that a swimming pool occupies in virtually every yard. Redesigning the swimming pool is almost always necessary when we invariably discover that the original pool either fails to respect the architecture of the house enough, or is disproportional to the size of the yard and ultimate plan for upgrading the landscape layout with a mindset toward a noticeable improvement in the quality of Houston outdoor living.

Of course, a back yard needs more than a new custom swimming pool create an environment that is more attractive to the visitor than the interior of the house. Hardscapes such as custom patios and outdoor lounges will be needed to provide the flooring and seating areas essential to comfortable Houston outdoor living. Landscape pathways of some kind must be built to connect outdoor buildings, gardens, pools, and courtyards so people can move freely throughout the yard. Outdoor lighting will be needed to make these transit areas safe at night, and to also make it possible for people to enjoy the full magnitude of the aesthetic at hand.

It is vitally important that all of this be done with enough foresight and attention to details that guests never feel they need to go inside the house because everything they need is outside. Outdoor rooms can be constructed with architecture and technology that rivals anything an indoor living room, kitchen, or media room has to offer. However, there is more creative license to work with when building outdoor rooms. Many structures do not require the traditional four walls with a ceiling. Some may have only a decorative wall surrounding a lighted fountain or natural swimming pool, while others may actually be courtyards surrounding morning gardens or Japanese gardens. Others may be built alongside of a pool, near a fountain, or next to a natural pond to put activities an arm's length away from nature.

Certain activities will require more than hardscape and residential landscape lighting. Things such as cooking, dining, playing video games, watching movies, and listening to music will require outdoor buildings such as summer kitchens, game rooms, and fully-functional outdoor living rooms can be built to make every aspect of outdoor living a veritable rival to any conceivable experience you can have inside.

Investing in landscaping of this magnitude represents a considerable investment that should be made for two primary purposes. The first is the obvious improvement in the quality of life that Houston outdoor living adds to one's personal lifestyle. The second is increased property value that helps protect the original investment made in the home and offers the very real possibility of an increased return on investment should the homeowner ever decide to sell the property and move on.
