Are you planning to take a fishing trip for catfish? Do you know what baits you need that will give the best results? Finding the right baits for catfish is not so easily answered.

There are many different types of catfish in the world and depending on which you're going to be fishing will depend on what you want to take for bait. This makes catfish fishing so much more exciting for anglers of all experience levels.

Catfish bait can be bought in a store or you can make it yourself. Personal preference is really what matters when you decide what bait you're going to use. Some people swear that only one type of bait will work on a specific catfish, while others would argue that you need to change up your bait because the catfish like diversity in food.

Regardless of what you believe to be true there are a few things that you need to consider that will increase your chances of success greatly. The more you know about catfish the more you'll understand what types of baits will work and what won't. Studying up on what you're going out to fish will really help you appreciate the experience that much more.

Understanding the Catfish
Catfish are one of the most aggressive fish you're ever going to come across. They're also very unique in the fact that they can live in just about any type of water. Catfish love places that have structures, either man-made or natural.

They prefer logs, tress, underwater vegetation and caves. This can make fishing for them quite challenging even to the most experienced fishermen.

Since catfish prefer to live in places with less visibility, they rely mainly on their sense of smell to get food. They do use their eyes like other fish but rely more on their sense of smell, especially ones that live in waters with very poor visibility. They like to feed on small fish, worms, crayfish and some vegetation.

Knowing these things about the catfish will help you better understand where you can find them when you get to your fishing spot. Finding the right place to fish is very important and knowing what to entice them with is also important. When possible, using their natural food source is a good idea. This isn't always practical however, and sometimes you have to use other types of baits to get them to bite.

Types of Catfish Baits
As mentioned before, there are baits you can buy and there are baits you can buy. When it comes to catfish fishing there is no universal bait that will catch you fish no matter what. You have to be able to adapt to the situation at hand and use what works no matter how strange it might seem to you. Here is a good list of baits that work well when fishing for catfish:
Chicken Livers
Worms
Minnows
Crayfish
Dough Balls
