Today's thrill seekers and fun lovers are always on the lookout for new ways to make great use of their leisure hours with their friends and family. Over the last 10 years, California kiteboarding has become all the rage in the Golden State, bringing in new enthusiasts to the sport by the droves. Many of those who have discovered kiteboarding have crossed over from other sports such as surfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding and mountainboarding. If you've been searching for an innovative method of testing your physical skills while having the time of your life, here a little more about how power kiting can take you to the limit.

-- Kiteboarding and kite surfing are really synonymous terms, and this sport is for those who like to get their thrills on the water, both fresh and saltwater. The athlete uses a specially-made inflatable oversized kite to self-propel over the water at breakneck speeds, using the natural forces of wind to carry them. The type and size of kite you use will depend on the wind conditions.

An inflatable kite is used because it will float when the user is in the water, allowing him to re-launch at will. They don't require a bridle system, so they are a cinch to set up and do not require a lot of maintenance either. Beginners will want to use a 2-line system because they are easier to use but more advanced kiteboarders choose a 4-line since they are more versatile in all kinds of wind conditions.

Three types of boards are used for water-based kiteboarding: twintip, wake-style, and surf-style. The one you choose depends on what kind of a ride you're looking for and what you are most comfortable using.

-- Kite snowboarding operates on the same wind propulsion principles as kiteboarding except that, as its name implies, it is enjoyed on snow. Because of the solid surface of the snow, this type of snowboarding does not require an inflatable kite. Most enthusiasts like to use a "foil kite" that is lightweight and is easy to self-launch, re-launch, as well as land. Gusty winds are common on the slopes, and foil kites are perfectly equipped to help boarders handle these types of winter conditions.

A great thing about kite snowboarding is that is does not require special boarding equipment other than the kite: you can use your usual snowboard or even skis if that's your preferred method of hitting the slopes.

-- Landboarding: Are you a skateboard enthusiast? Yes, there's a power kite for you too. The foil kite that is great for kitesnowboarding is also perfect for landboarding. Foil kites designed especially for this sport do not create any lift, yet can propel their users over great distances at any speed they choose. The same kite can be used by both beginners and pros and adds another dimension to your skateboarding experience.

Whatever your venue of choice is, be it water, snow, or asphalt, try adding a power kite into the mix for a brand new way to get some serious thrills.
