When people think about dog clothes, they tend to conjure up images of celebrities such as Paris Hilton. Paris regularly dresses her small pets up in various doggy designer clothing and keeps her pets in handbags. Fashion for dogs has now become a big business and doggy apparel is available in a range of different colours and styles. Here in this article we shall look at how you and your pet can enjoy dressing up but in a safe and suitable way for your puppy.

Dog clothing can be more than just fashion for some dogs, smaller dogs or dogs with really thin coats will appreciate the warmth of a dog coat. These accessories will protect your loved pets from the weather, keep them warm and prevent illness in colder weather. Although the pets clothing may look very appealing, you must be very careful when choosing dog clothes for your pet to wear. Badly fitted dog clothes can hurt your best friend and stop them from being able to move freely, it can even trap them.

If you want to avoid this danger and keep your pet fashionable, an important thing to do is to make sure that any of the dog clothes you purchase are the right size. First you must measure your dog's chest and the circumference of the neck. You should also measure the length of the back, which is easiest to do by measuring from the neck to the tail. If you purchase an item and it seems a bit tight on your dog then you should definitely purchase the next size up. It is not fair to leave your pet in clothing too tight or they will be uncomfortable, the point of these products is to keep your pet happy and warm, not suffocated.

Next bare in mind what climate you live in and how short your dog's fur is, if your dog is both small and with a short coat they will be susceptible to getting colder in the winter. A small coat is not a bad idea for a dog with these attributes. Some dog clothes are water proof and designed to keep your pooch dry during the winter months, but make sure these are not used during summer. Making your pet wear this apparel during the summer and hotter months will make them overheat and is cruel. Always watch your pet carefully when they are wearing their dog clothes and check they are a suitable temperature.
