Choosing The Right Pet Food

Animals are good companions. Still, even if these pets are happy and content to be in the human world, it does not mean that they can survive on human food. Formulating the right kind of diet for a pet is as complicated as getting a balanced diet for a human being. As can be seen, this is really not something that most people know how to do.

There are certain kinds of pets that would not eat anything other than what their species have always habitually eaten, but the more common pets, like dogs or cats will usually eat what their owners put on their plate. Given the fact that most owners will have neither the time nor the skill to measure and prepare the right balance of food groups, the thing to do is to buy quality pet food that has been formulated specially for the pet.

A pet owner should also note that sub-species and breeds can also have different food requirements, like for example a goldfish will need different nutrition from a coy fish, or a pug dog will have different needs from a border collie.

Is Your Pet on the Right Food?

If you're unsure of what food to feed the pet, ask a veterinarian or the breeder from whom the pet came from. Also, observe if the animal is thriving or not on the food that he is on. Check if the animal is at the right weight at the stage of development, and if it is not lethargic.

A pet owner should also observe the stools of the pet, if possible, because soft stools may mean that the pet food is incompatible with its constitution or the pet may be experiencing food allergies. When trying to change the food brand that one is feeding the pet, do so in gradual proportions. A sudden change can cause serious gastric upsets.

Along with good food, a pet owner should always provide the pet with clean water to drink, preferably from the same source as they would drink from.

Feeding Proportions

Always follow the feeding instructions on the labels of the food for the pet. Too much or too little food can be detrimental to the pet's health, especially in very young animals. Do not add other types of foods to the pet's food unless instructed or allowed by the veterinarian. Giving treats to pets should also only be done in moderation, and not necessarily in the form of food.

Where to Buy It

Pet stores will normally carry most kinds of pet food for popular pets, like dogs, cats, gerbils or rabbits. Exotic pets like snakes, iguanas and tropical fish have diets that are harder to provide for, but for both types of pets, it would be easy enough to look for online stores and stores at the malls that carry the recommended brand or type of food.

When buying food for a pet, one should also ask about the shelf life of the food, and based on that, buy only in such quantities that the pet will consume before the expiration date.
