If you can afford to pay for a professional dog trainer then you should most probably go that route but the truth is that a pro dog trainer can be very expensive so you may want to try the "DIY" route if you don't have that much money. Yes pro dog trainers are likely to do a better job than you but do you want to pay all of that money every time your dog needs training?

There are some big positives to training your dog yourself. The biggest, of course, is that you will save a lot of money. But that's definitely not the only good thing about it.

In the process of learning how to train your own dog you will learn a lot about dog behavior and dog obedience. This will make you a much better dog owner who can relate to your dog in a much better way. With the proper dog training guide (high quality dog training guides can actually be downloaded online instantly) you will learn how to deal with all kinds of dog behavior problems so that no matter what kind of problem arises, you will be able to correct it.

Have you ever heard the saying "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man how to fish and he eats for a lifetime"? The same thing applies here.

Certainly if a pro dog trainer teaches your dog then your dog's behavior problems will go away but the next time you have a dog with a behavior problem you will just have to take them back to the trainer. On the other hand if you learn how to train your own dog then you will have the expertise to deal not only with your current situation but with future situations as well!

Of course, there are also big negatives to training your own dog. It will take a lot of your time and energy to do a good job. Maybe you're too busy to really learn how to best train your own dog.

And what if you have a large dangerous dog such as a pit bull or a bulldog? Well I think it's important to consider the dangerous nature of such breeds. You really don't want to get into a situation you are not comfortable with. If you have a more dangerous dog then perhaps you should seek out a professional trainer rather than going the DIY route. It just depends on what you feel comfortable with.
