Some people believe that dogs can best survive on the leftovers from its owners, as this has been the tradition for many years. But in reality, dogs need much more than just leftovers. Dog food essentials consist of nutrients like fatty acids, amino acids, minerals and carbohydrates for good health. Dog food comprises of home cooked food, raw food as well commercial food. Though some argue that commercial dog food is not as safe and nutritious as it appears to be.

Ensure the food is good for your dog:

When you purchase dog food for your pampered pet, you need to ensure that the food is actually healthy, and not the canine version of fast food. Many commerical dog foods these days are made from fresh ingredients, and some are even stored in the fridge section of the supermarket. These fresh foods consist of meat, carbohydrates, essential fats and amino acids, not to mention vitamins and minerals. Not-so-healthy foods should be kept as treats for rewards or training, not as every day meals.

Advantages of commercial dog food:

Store-bought dog food is better for your dog for many reasons. First and foremost, the ingredients are standardised and mass-produced, so you know you're always getting the same thing. If you buy a particular can, you're guaranteed that can will consistently have the same ingredients, consistency, taste and texture. Your dog will get used to the particular smell and taste, and will get to expect it. He might even turn his nose up at any other food you try to give him. Be wary of swapping brands as changing foods might cause tummy upsets.

Secondly, the commercial foods will be manufactured on equipment and using proccesses that guarantees it will be hygenic and safe to eat. The foods will be cooked to the right temperatures and using the best quality ingredients. You don't want your beloved pooch getting sick from bacteria-laden food.
Dry dog foods are preferred as they do not spoil easily. Ensure that when you give your dog dry food, he has a plentiful supply of water nearby.

Tailor-made dog food:

There are some foods that are made specifically for dogs allergic to wheat, chicken or corn. If your dog has an allergy, or an intolerance, chances are that there is a food for them.

Finding dog food coupons:

Dog food can be really expensive. In order to cut down cost, you can find dog food coupons in newspapers and also online. The internet is a very good option as there are numerous companies that distribute coupons online, and they can be printed out. If you sign up for newsletters, they will inform you beforehand. It is indeed a good idea for minimising your costs.

When you feed your dogs, remember to give them the best nutrition in any form. Also bestow rewards on your dogs by giving them special treats sometimes. It will help bond you and your dog in a special manner.
